Origin

Originating in the 1930s from classic rummy-style games, Okey Rummy is a beloved Turkish tile game that has been played for decades. It is for 2-4 players, played with 106 tiles and the faces of the tiles each have a number from 1 to 13. The tiles are broken into four different colored sets of 26 tiles. This updated version breathes new life into this classic with a deluxe board game box and all the components needed to play the game. This makes an excellent Christmas and birthday gift for any board game, casino, poker, rummy game fans or those who want to add a classic to their family game night collection.

The Game

To win, players build a hand of matching colors, runs of numbered tiles, or blow the competition out of the water with seven matched pairs. The action movies fast as tiles are drawn and discarded. The face of the tiles each have a number from 1 to 13. The tiles are broken into four different colored sets of 26 tiles. There are two special tiles without number - these are known as the "sahte okey," or "false jokers" which have special game instructions included.

The Execution

Even though the product components are sourced from the manufacturer, the packaging and instructions are all custom. The packaging is a simple lid and base with a matte laminate finish. To elevate the packaging, it was decided to use a gold foil for the pattern. From the title lockup to the pattern, all packaging artwork is custom illustrated.

After conducting research into Turkish culture, it was decided to use red and gold to represent the ornateness of Turkey. The title lockup has a playful yet memorable look and alludes to Turkish calligraphy with each stroke. The patterns originated from Turkish architecture from their temples and mosques. Everything is meant to set this apart from other offerings and pay homage to the Turkish culture in a respectable way.

Packing

To make sure all components fit perfectly into the box, this product needed to be packed a certain way.

Other Proposed Concepts: One

This concept focused on the environment and sandy nature of Turkey. Photos of sand were used as textures and everything is offset with shadows to make it feel like it is being stenciled into the sand.

Other Proposed Concepts: Two

This concept was centered around their use of pattern and taking that pattern and pulling it apart to reveal the title. After studying their patterns, this one was created for this concept making this concept easier to execute. Even though these were decent contenders, the best concept won.
